2017 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

2017 sonoma coast chardonnay
ph 3.46
alcohol 14.2%
acidity 0.65g/100ml
barreling 10 months in 20% New French Oak, 80% neutral French Oak.
details Comprised of Wente Clone and Clone 4, a part of the fruit was crushed and given skin contact for 24 hours before being combined with the rest of the fruit that was whole cluster pressed. It was barrel fermented, lees stirred monthly, kept lively with a good dose of malic in the finished wine. It was filtered and bottled in July 2018. Tasting Notes Vinified in our usual way with leaner, lively Chardonnay in mind, it was fermented and bottled with layered acidity and subtle oak in style. At first, it seems a bit reticent but with aeration, it gains complexity. Actually, like many of our reds, it shows better the next day with fuller body, better structure and complexity. In the nose, it shows pear, lemon rind, vanilla, nutmeg, followed by tightly wound, well focused fruit reminiscent of green apples, citrus, stone fruit.

ph 3.52
alcohol 14.3%
acidity 0.62g/100ml
barreling 16 months in 67% New French Oak, 33% Once used French Oak.
details The fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 4 days, emphasis being gentle, followed by two weeks of maceration. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines were racked once and bottled in January of 2018. Tasting Notes As usual, this cool site Russian River Valley Pinot Noir shows its live, focused intensity despite its ripe and mature fruit. Compelling aromas of ripe bing cherry, raspberry, plum, tea and spice that lead to dense flavors of pomegranate, cherry, vanilla and toast. The tannins are well integrated and the finish well focused. It is a spicy, layered, intense Pinot Noir. It is a touch riper than the 2015, fuller and darker. We believe this should be another long lived 8-10 year Pinot Noir. Try a bottle now but put most of it away with the confidence that it will turn into something very special with proper cellaring.

2016 Pamplemousse, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

2016 pamplemousse sauvignon blanc napa valley
ph 3.08
alcohol 12.8%
acidity 0.73g/100ml
barreling 7 months in 50% Neutral French Oak, 50% Stainless.
details The fruit was picked multiple times with live acidity and bright citrus in mind, more in style with Kiwi than California. As usual a part of the fruit was picked 24 hours ahead, pigeaged, combined with the rest of the fruit, then whole cluster pressed. It was barrel fermented in combination of neutral oak and stainless steel barrels.
notes A Sauvignon Blanc with tension and focus, it shows aromas of nose of grapefruit, melon and white flowers. It is lively and complex, showing an exquisite balance of fruit and acidity with flavors of meyer lemon, apples and, of course, Pamplemousse. It finishes clean, though at room temperature its waxy skin tannin shows, and perhaps a slightly bitter peach pit. While it is easy to quaff on a warm afternoon, we have been surprised at its structure. It will be interesting to watch it develop over the next few years as it sheds its acidity and gain complexity.

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

2015 cabernet sauvignon napa valley
ph 3.74
alcohol 14.%
acidity 0.615g/100ml
barreling 22 months in 75% New French Oak, 25% once used French Oak.
details All the fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 3-4 days, they were fermented for 18-27 days with the maximum temperature of 82-86 degrees in an open top tank and small open top fermentors with the emphasis being gentle. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked two times, blended and bottled in August of 2016. Tasting Notes While it reflects the mountain grown tannins, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvigon is sweeter, more approachable beauty that many people will consume early. It is just as dense as the 2013 with less formidable tannins. Out of the glass, it shows earthy aromatic notes with hints of minerality, cherry liqueur, brambly wild black fruit. As usual, it is dense, concentrated and powerful. It opens up after aeration to show more red-black fruit but has underlying earthiness. Dark forest fruits dominate up front with wild blackberry, black cherry and sage notes. It should prove to be a long lasting Cabernet Sauvignon, just approachable earlier.

2015 Mosaique, Napa Valley

2015 mosaique napa valley
ph 3.6
alcohol 14.9%
acidity 0.65g/100ml
barreling 34 months in 30% New French Oak, 70% once used French Oak.
details Each lot was cold soaked for 3 to 5 days and then fermented separately in open top stainless steel tanks and bins for 14 to 16 days with the maximum temperature of 82-86 degrees. The lots were pressed into barrels where malolactic fermentation took place and monitored separately. They were racked 3 times before being blended and bottled in August of 2018. Tasting Notes Clearly, this is a complex wine with aeration but at first, it seems so fruit driven, it’s hard not to keep drinking it. In great harmony currently with cassis, cherry, blueberry notes, it is plush, ripe, balanced by refreshing acidity. It shows excellent concentration and viscosity. Despite being aged in oak for almost 3 years, the oak is mainly present in the long finish. Like the last few Mosaiques, this is comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc but it tastes more right bank, just a bit riper. This would be the perfect weeknight wine to go with stews, pasta or almost anything grilled.

2015 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

2015 sonoma coast pinot noir
ph 3.57
alcohol 14.7%
acidity 0.61g/100ml
barreling 10 months in 30% New French Oak, 70% once-used French Oak.
details All the fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 3-4 days, they were fermented for 12-14 days with the maximum temperature of 82-84 degrees in an open top tank and small open top fermentors with the emphasis being gentle. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines was racked once, blended and bottled in August of 2016
notes Somewhat restrained compared to our 2014 Sonoma Coast Pinot, this is still on the riper side with good complexity. Cool-climate flavors of dried cherry, wild raspberry, mineral, saline show through a clean finish. As usual, it is about fruit and not oak. The texture is smooth with well integrated tannins. With aeration, it opens up to reveal kirsch, forest floor and mushroom notes as well. Overall, it’s exquisitely balanced, yummy pinot noir that is so easy to like. It would pair very well with cool weather soups and stews. It can surely last 5 years easily but why wait when it shows so well now.

2014 Mosaique, Napa Valley

2014 mosaique napa valley
ph 3.56
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.62g/100ml
barreling 21 months in 30% New French Oak, 70% once-used French Oak.
details Each lot was cold soaked for 4 to 6 days and then fermented separately in open top stainless steel tanks and bins for 14 to 16 days with the maximum temperature of 83-86 degrees. The lots were pressed into barrels where malolactic fermentation took place and monitored separately. They were racked 3 times before being blended and bottled in August of 2016.
notes As usual, we state it is made with earlier consumption in mind, though this should last longer than most Mosaiques. Every vintage has easily lasted 10 or more years. 2014 is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. While the entry is similar to the 2012 Mosaique with its cherry, blackberry, currant, dark chocolate notes, what follows is different as the hillside Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the finish with grippy, oaky, long, with intense finish. On the third day after it was opened, it was immensely enjoyable for us. Needless to say aeration would be recommended to enjoy in its youth. Try a bottle or two now and stash the rest to watch it slowly reveal itself over the next 6-8 years.

2014 Umino Vineyard Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

2014 umino vineyard pinot noir russian river valley
ph 3.48
alcohol 14.3%
acidity 0.65g/100ml
barreling 10 months in 67% New French Oak, 33% 1 & 2 year old French Oak.
details The fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 4 days, they were fermented for 12 days with the maximum temperature of 82 degrees in an open top tank with the emphasis being gentle, followed by two weeks of maceration. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines were racked once and bottled in August of 2014.
vineyard Located a few miles south of Sebastopol, this steep hillside vineyard is in a cool growing area influenced by the Petaluma Gap wind and fog. Planted in 1997 and 1998 to four Dijon clones that complement each other well, the yields are kept low to ensure intensity and complexity.
notes This hillside vineyard is located in a cool part of Russian River Valley AVA, making it possible to achieve physiological ripeness at a slower pace. Despite its medium-deep red, pale rimmed color, its concentration and complexity, combined with its brightness, suggests a cellar age. Tight on opening then with aeration shows aromas of cherry, pomegranate, cinnamon, mushroom, smoke and forest. Elegant flavors of subtle black cherry, cranberry, a stewed strawberry, red fruit liqueur are held in check by medium firm tannins and bright acidity via a long finish. A bit reminiscent of the 2009 Umino, which is drinking beautifully, it should last 8-10 years easily. If you want to enjoy it young, drink over a 24 to 48 hour window to watch it slowly loosen its grip. It can be enjoyed with, of course oily fish like salmon but many gamey dishes should also work well.

2014 Thornton Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

2014 thornton vineyard pinot noir sonoma coast
ph 3.46
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.67g/100ml
barreling 10 months in 50% New French Oak, 50% 1 & 2 year old French Oak.
details The fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 4 days, it was fermented for 12 days with the maximum temperature of 84 degrees in an open top tank with the emphasis being gentle, then macerated for another 15 days before being pressed. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked once and bottled in August of 2015.
vineyard Located up in the mountains west of Sonoma Mountain, it has both the elevation and Petaluma Gap winds to keep its fruit vibrant and yet ripe.
notes Made in our traditional style, this is built to last. In the nose, it shows earth, forest floor and mineral notes in the glass in addition to the usual cherry pie, plum, raspberry liqueur aromas. It is mouth-coating, full-bodied with ripe plum, baked cherry flavors and hints of toast, cinnamon, touch of grilled bread, game through finish. It is rich on palate with good firm acid balance. This is a substantial pinot that should age 7-8 years easily. As a comparison, we recently opened a bottle of our 2004 Pinot Noir and was pleasantly surprised at its freshness. We knew the complexity would be there. For food match, fish and game would be a natural paring but in this case, even steaks with rich sauce would work.

2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 napa valley cabernet sauvignon
ph 3.71
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.61g/100ml
barreling 22 months in 75% New French Oak, 25% once-used French Oak.
details All the fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 3-4 days, they were fermented for 14-21 days with the maximum temperature of 82-82 degrees in an open top tank and small open top fermentors with the emphasis being gentle. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked once, blended and bottled in August of 2015.
notes To follow in a long line of mountain top Cabernets, here is another full-bodied, concentrated tannic wine. It is opaque, saturated deep purple to black in the glass. Nose of fresh blackberry, cassis syrup, spiced cherry with hints of black olives, herbs, then roasted meat, tobacco, touch of graphite. Juicy out of the bottle then texture firms up as the ripe tannins dominate and cover up its fruit. Rich and seemingly just a touch riper than 2012, mid-palate shows red and black fruits of cherry, blackberry, black currants. The mountain tannins combined with all the lavish new oak has resulted in a powerful wine that requires bottle age to reveal itself. The finish is long and grippy due to firm tannins. As usual, if you will have this wine young, overnight aeration will show its richness and intensity with blackberry, cassis melded with vanilla and oak. Its firmness is reminiscent of our 2008 Cabernets when they were released, which show beautifully now.

2013 Napa Valley Syrah

2013 napa valley syrah
ph 3.7
alcohol 14.8%
acidity 0.53g/100ml
details The lots were cold soaked for 4-5 days, then fermented for 10-12 days with the maximum temperatures reaching around 85 degrees.
vineyard The cool Coombsville area known for red fruit was combined with the mountain fruit of Atlas Peak. Being in the cool zone of the warm Napa Valley ensures balance as well as ripeness. The slight dehydration of berries often results in higher intensity.
notes Like our 2012 Zinfandel and 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, here is a wine of intensity and complexity that shows better with lots of aeration, like up to 24 hours. It has aromas of fresh blueberries, blackberries, roasted meat, wild flowers and white pepper. When it was bottled, it showed more blue/black fruit aromas but since then has also revealed bright aromas of raspberry/blackberry/red cherry. The first taste impressions offer seemingly simple blackberry, blueberry flavors with medium body and soft tannins. With a few hours of aeration, it transforms into a totally different wine of palate-coating, rich texture with firm and vibrant acidity from start to finish that lifts the darker fruit flavors. Intriguing flavors of sweet brandied cherries and hints of root beer/sarsaparilla, spicy fruit and herb, mineral characteristic, make it almost like a cool-climate Syrah with northern rhone-like meatiness. Given the ample tannins, it would be a good candidate for 8-10 years in ageability. If any of you are lucky enough to be holding our 2005 or 2006 Syrah, you can try them to get a glimpse of time influence. The 2013 should out last those wines

2013 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

2013 sonoma coast chardonnay
ph 3.49
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.67g/100ml
barreling 18 months in 20% New French Oak, 80% neutral French Oak.
details Comprised of Wente and clone 4, a part of the fruit was crushed and given skin contact for 24 hours before being combined with the rest of the fruit that was whole cluster pressed. It was barrel fermented and the lees stirred monthly until next spring.
vineyard Located southeast of Petaluma, this hillside vineyard was planted starting in 1989. It has the Petaluma Gap wind influence to keep it bright as the fruit ripens.
notes The goal in this wine was fruit intensity but not oak or butter. It shows layered acidity and lots of fruit. Aromas of apple, some warm baked fruit, roasted nuts, vanilla, hint of cinnamon are very inviting. In the mouth it shows high concentration of dense fruit from opening though finish, opulent, very richly textured chardonnay. Very long on palate, flavors of baked citrus, golden apple, butterscotch, almond, hints of hazelnut come through. It has a lot of complexity but also zip and balance. This chardonnay will age well 3-5 years easily.
