details Comprised of clones 317 and 1, a part of the fruit was picked 24 hours ahead, pigeaged, combined with the rest of the fruit, then whole cluster pressed. It was barrel fermented in combinaƟon of neutral oak and stainless steel barrels.
vineyard The fruit from cooler Coombsville area complements the intensity of mountain top Atlas Peak fruit.
notes The goal in this wine was to capture the live acidity and the citrus fruit. Aromas of pink grapefruit, lemon zest and white stone fruit lead to flavors of lemon-lime, nectarine and grapefruit. The wine is focused, zingy and spicy. As it shed some of the chill, it becomes broader and richer with exotic flavors of pomelo, key lime, white grapefruit. The flavors are very balanced, precise with juicy finish. Most of all, it wants to be drunk now, though it will be very interesting to see how it evolves with bottle age.

2014 Thornton Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

2014 thornton vineyard pinot noir sonoma coast c61baf30a01743bbbf87fd6cac160e0d578e7bdc7904475937ff21f5605422f2
ph 3.46
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.67g/100ml
barreling 10 months in 50% New French Oak, 50% 1 & 2 year old French Oak.
details The fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 4 days, it was fermented for 12 days with the maximum temperature of 84 degrees in an open top tank with the emphasis being gentle, then macerated for another 15 days before being pressed. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked once and bottled in August of 2015.
vineyard Located up in the mountains west of Sonoma Mountain, it has both the elevation and Petaluma Gap winds to keep its fruit vibrant and yet ripe.
notes Made in our traditional style, this is built to last. In the nose, it shows earth, forest floor and mineral notes in the glass in addition to the usual cherry pie, plum, raspberry liqueur aromas. It is mouth-coating, full-bodied with ripe plum, baked cherry flavors and hints of toast, cinnamon, touch of grilled bread, game through finish. It is rich on palate with good firm acid balance. This is a substantial pinot that should age 7-8 years easily. As a comparison, we recently opened a bottle of our 2004 Pinot Noir and was pleasantly surprised at its freshness. We knew the complexity would be there. For food match, fish and game would be a natural paring but in this case, even steaks with rich sauce would work.

ph 3.6

details All the fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 3-4 days, they were fermented for 10-12 days with the maximum temperature of 83-85 degrees in an open top tank and small open top fermentors with the emphasis being gentle. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines was racked once, blended and bottled in August of 2015
vineyard The grapes were from two low yielding vineyards located in cool areas of the Sonoma Coast. It is an area renowned for vineyards that are influenced by wind and fog that slowly matures the fruit and maintain its vibrancy.
notes A variant from past Sonoma Coast Pinots, this is a bold, ripe wine with strawberry, black cherry flavors. The sweet aromas of cherry compote, strawberry and toast lead to high-toned tart cherry, raspberry flavors. Initially the bright acidity balances out the ripe fruit flavors but gradually sweetens up with aeration. As the wine unwinds, the notes of black cherries, hard red candy, touch of minerality, cracked pepper, a little citrusy acidity through finish. The oak is well integrated and subtle. Very lively and expressive pinot noir, it conjures up strawberry compote in a glass. It is ready to drink but we suspect it will keep well for at least 5 years.

ph 3.48

barreling 10 months in 67% New French Oak, 33% 1 & 2 year old French Oak.
details The fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 4 days, they were fermented for 12 days with the maximum temperature of 82 degrees in an open top tank with the emphasis being gentle, followed by two weeks of maceration. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines were racked once and bottled in August of 2014.
vineyard Located a few miles south of Sebastopol, this steep hillside vineyard is in a cool growing area influenced by the Petaluma Gap wind and fog. Planted in 1997 and 1998 to four Dijon clones that complement each other well, the yields are kept low to ensure intensity and complexity.
notes This hillside vineyard is located in a cool part of Russian River Valley AVA, making it possible to achieve physiological ripeness at a slower pace. Despite its medium-deep red, pale rimmed color, its concentration and complexity, combined with its brightness, suggests a cellar age. Tight on opening then with aeration shows aromas of cherry, pomegranate, cinnamon, mushroom, smoke and forest. Elegant flavors of subtle black cherry, cranberry, a stewed strawberry, red fruit liqueur are held in check by medium firm tannins and bright acidity via a long finish. A bit reminiscent of the 2009 Umino, which is drinking beautifully, it should last 8-10 years easily. If you want to enjoy it young, drink over a 24 to 48 hour window to watch it slowly loosen its grip. It can be enjoyed with, of course oily fish like salmon but many gamey dishes should also work well.

details Comprised of Wente and clone 4, a part of the fruit was crushed and given skin contact for 24 hours before being combined with the rest of the fruit that was whole cluster pressed. It was barrel fermented and the lees stirred monthly until next spring.
vineyard Located southeast of Petaluma, this hillside vineyard was planted starting in 1989. It has the Petaluma Gap wind influence to keep it bright as the fruit ripens.
notes The goal in this wine was fruit intensity but not oak or butter. It shows layered acidity and lots of fruit. Aromas of apple, some warm baked fruit, roasted nuts, vanilla, hint of cinnamon are very inviting. In the mouth it shows high concentration of dense fruit from opening though finish, opulent, very richly textured chardonnay. Very long on palate, flavors of baked citrus, golden apple, butterscotch, almond, hints of hazelnut come through. It has a lot of complexity but also zip and balance. This chardonnay will age well 3-5 years easily.

2013 Napa Valley Syrah

ph 3.7
alcohol 14.8%
acidity 0.53g/100ml
details The lots were cold soaked for 4-5 days, then fermented for 10-12 days with the maximum temperatures reaching around 85 degrees.
vineyard The cool Coombsville area known for red fruit was combined with the mountain fruit of Atlas Peak. Being in the cool zone of the warm Napa Valley ensures balance as well as ripeness. The slight dehydration of berries often results in higher intensity.
notes Like our 2012 Zinfandel and 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, here is a wine of intensity and complexity that shows better with lots of aeration, like up to 24 hours. It has aromas of fresh blueberries, blackberries, roasted meat, wild flowers and white pepper. When it was bottled, it showed more blue/black fruit aromas but since then has also revealed bright aromas of raspberry/blackberry/red cherry. The first taste impressions offer seemingly simple blackberry, blueberry flavors with medium body and soft tannins. With a few hours of aeration, it transforms into a totally different wine of palate-coating, rich texture with firm and vibrant acidity from start to finish that lifts the darker fruit flavors. Intriguing flavors of sweet brandied cherries and hints of root beer/sarsaparilla, spicy fruit and herb, mineral characteristic, make it almost like a cool-climate Syrah with northern rhone-like meatiness. Given the ample tannins, it would be a good candidate for 8-10 years in ageability. If any of you are lucky enough to be holding our 2005 or 2006 Syrah, you can try them to get a glimpse of time influence. The 2013 should out last those wines

ph 3.71
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.61g/100ml
barreling 22 months in 75% New French Oak, 25% once-used French Oak.
details All the fruit was carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed with high whole berry content. After cold soaking for 3-4 days, they were fermented for 14-21 days with the maximum temperature of 82-82 degrees in an open top tank and small open top fermentors with the emphasis being gentle. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked once, blended and bottled in August of 2015.
notes To follow in a long line of mountain top Cabernets, here is another full-bodied, concentrated tannic wine. It is opaque, saturated deep purple to black in the glass. Nose of fresh blackberry, cassis syrup, spiced cherry with hints of black olives, herbs, then roasted meat, tobacco, touch of graphite. Juicy out of the bottle then texture firms up as the ripe tannins dominate and cover up its fruit. Rich and seemingly just a touch riper than 2012, mid-palate shows red and black fruits of cherry, blackberry, black currants. The mountain tannins combined with all the lavish new oak has resulted in a powerful wine that requires bottle age to reveal itself. The finish is long and grippy due to firm tannins. As usual, if you will have this wine young, overnight aeration will show its richness and intensity with blackberry, cassis melded with vanilla and oak. Its firmness is reminiscent of our 2008 Cabernets when they were released, which show beautifully now.

The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines was racked once, blended and bottled in August of 2015
vineyard Most of the Cabernet Sauvignon comes form high on eastern mountains of Atlas Peak with Merlot from Carneros and Cabernet Franc from Mt. Veeder. The goal was to capture its intensity and minerality along with its fruit components
notes Built like a young classic Bordeaux with California mountain characters, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows freshness and minerality combined with the usual power of our Cabernets. The formidable tannins slowly reveal the fruit components of raspberry, cherry, cassis, blackberry to complement its sage, herbaceous notes. It takes about an hour to show its sweet fruit core. It is a dark, opaque with purple edge. It has all the intensity and complexity you have come to expect from our Cabernet Sauvignons. It is as powerful Cabernet Sauvignon as any from us. It should easily last 15 years so hopefully you can give it the respect that we have so far. Steak anyone?

ph 3.66

barreling 22 months in 30% New French Oak, 70% 1 and 2 Year Old French Oak.
details Each lot was cold soaked for 4 to 5 days and then fermented separately in open top stainless steel tanks and bins for 10 to 16 days with the maximum temperature of 82-86 degrees. The lots were pressed into barrels where malolactic fermentation took place and monitored separately. They were racked 3 times before being blended and bottled in August of 2014.
notes Here is a Mosaique that resembles something like the 2005 in terms of flavor profile. Deep crimson to black in color, its appealing aromas show lots of spice, cinnamon, cocoa, dark chocolate, maraschino cherry, black fruit liqueur. Bright and firm acidity up front, juicy, zippy, fruit-forward, clean flavors show from start to finish. Notes of Red raspberries, Bing cherry, chocolate, coffee berries, cracked black pepper, and a little minerality peek through finish. Medium tannins, integrated acid, balanced and not too big compared to our past Mosaiques. It is drinkable now but should age well for a few years.

barreling 18 months in 20% New French Oak, 80% 1&2 year old French Oak.

notes Inviting scents of lavender, blueberry, blackberry, smoked meats reveal a rich, lush, complex syrah. On the palate it shows blackberry, cherry, blueberry flavors with hints of pepper and licorice. It is a dark, layered syrah with emphasis on fruit and not oak. With a few hours or even better, an overnight aeration, it shows a wine in harmony. Some of you will lay it down but it is so enjoyable now, it begs to be drunk now.

2012 Zinfandel, Napa Valley

ph 3.61
alcohol 14.5%
acidity 0.64g/100ml
barreling 18 months in 20% New French Oak, 80% 1&2 year old French Oak.
details From low yields of less than 3 tons per acre, this old vine zinfandel was hand picked, sorted meticulously, cold soaked for 4 days before being fermented for 14 days. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wine was racked 2 times before being bottled in May of 2014.
notes This relatively dark, brooding zinfandel with cherry, blackberry, plum, cocoa, cinnamon and sage notes needs a few hours of aeration to loosen up and reveal itself. It is ripe, concentrated with a good amount of tannin as usual. Along with our 2004 zinfandel, it is probably one of the most complex zinfandels ever. Spicy Italian, grilled sausages, or one of our favorites, chicken vindaloo, would all work well. Be sure to serve it cool, low 60’s, to show off its fruit. Should drink well until 2020.

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

ph 3.58
alcohol 14.3%
acidity 0.59g/100ml
barreling 20 months in 70% New French Oak, 30% 1&2 year old French Oak.
notes Here is a Cabernet Sauvignon that shows massive tannins, ripe, sweet cherry core and mouth coating finish. It is still a very young wine with high intensity that would benefit from a few years of bottle age. Out of the glass it shows expressive aromas of cherry, blackberry, vanilla, espresso and toast. On the palate, youthful flavors of cherry, cassis, blackberry and spice are combined with high tannin and powerful oak flavors and a very long finish. It is dense wine, packed with fruit and the hillside intensity. The best way to enjoy it now is to try a glass but let it breath for a few hours. At 24 hours, one can get a glimpse of its future.

2009 Mosaique, Red Wine, Napa Valley

ph 3.49
alcohol 13.8%
acidity 0.63g/100ml
barreling 20 months in 30% New French Oak, 70% 1 and 2 Year Old French Oak.
details Each lot was cold soaked for 4 to 5 days and then fermented separately in open top stainless steel tanks and bins for 10 to 16 days with the maximum temperature of 84-86 degrees. The lots were pressed into barrels where malolactic fermentation took place and monitored separately. They were racked 4 times before being blended and bottled in August of 2011.
notes The 2009 Mosaique has many of the same components as the 2008. Like the 2008, it is comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The 2009 has fleshy, intense ripe bing cherry, blackberry flavors with well integrated subtle oak finish. Like our past Mosaiques, it is a pleasure to drink now with its right bank components. Inviting aromas of black cherry, blackberry, espresso and vanilla lead to pure fruit flavors of cherry, blackberry and cassis. Subtle oak and fine tannins, combined with the expressive fruit and well-focused, clean finish says this should drink well for the next 5-7 years easily. You would be surprised at its versatility to match different foods, from grilled meats to red sauced dishes.

details The fruit was hand sorted, destemmed with the high whole berry content. The malolactic fermentation took place in the barrel. The wines were racked 3 times before being bottled in August 2011.
vineyard At elevation of 750 feet above Silverado Trail due east of Rutherford, this picturesque vineyard is known for its thick skinned, dark, intense fruit. The yields are always low and the fruit so distinct, the special care it receives is reflected in the bottle.
notes Here is another in a long line of Sacrashes that we are proud of. It has a deep red to black color with opaque center. Aromatic and expressive nose of black cherry, cassis and liqueur combined with hints of cedar, mint and orange peel make it very inviting. Both the aromas and flavors are complex and concentrated. Loads of well-integrated blackberry, black cherry, cassis, roasted meat, grilled bread flavors yield to a powerful finish with sweet tannins and superb balance. It should easily last for another 20 years. While it can accompany many things, the first dish that comes to mind is prime rib.
